Why Are All My Friends Turning Into Ads
VOL. 006
ROAD TO HELL
10 min
We got really good at ignoring ads.
Skip.
Scroll.
Mute.
We know when we’re being sold something.
So advertising adapted.
IT STARTED LOOKING LIKE US.
⸻
INTENT
WE WANTED REAL PEOPLE.
Not another celebrity holding a product they may or may not have ever used.
We wanted recommendations from people whose taste we actually liked.
If her outfits are always good, tell me where the jeans are from.
If he somehow finds the best new music, I’ll listen when he recommends something.
If someone has tried ten versions of the same product, please tell me which one won.
It felt useful.
Personal.
Like getting a recommendation from someone you trusted instead of being marketed to.
PEOPLE TRUST PEOPLE.
And brands realized that too.
⸻
OUTCOME
BEING REAL BECAME REALLY VALUABLE.
Suddenly you didn’t need to make an ad people trusted.
You could pay someone they already trusted.
And that opened a lot of doors.
People built entire careers from their taste, personality and point of view.
Creators who never would’ve been chosen for a traditional campaign suddenly had their own audiences.
That’s a good thing.
But it also meant the messy bedroom, the storytime, the casual recommendation, the I’ve been obsessed with this lately…
became incredibly valuable advertising space.
AUTHENTICITY COULD BE MONETIZED.
And now we’re so used to it that we can practically feel a sponsorship coming.
You guys keep asking me about this…
There it is.
⸻
REMAINS
DO YOU ACTUALLY LIKE IT?
Probably.
That’s what makes this complicated.
Someone can love something and get paid to tell you about it.
A recommendation doesn’t automatically become fake because money is involved.
Creators deserve to get paid.
Brands want people who genuinely use their products.
We still want recommendations from people whose taste we trust.
None of that disappeared.
What disappeared was the clean line between a person sharing their life and a person selling something inside it.
Influencer marketing was supposed to make advertising feel more human.
IT DID.
Maybe a little too well.
Because now the ad looks like someone we follow.
Sounds like someone we trust.
Shows up between their vacation pictures and stories about their boyfriend.
We wanted recommendations that felt like they came from our friends.
Now sometimes our friends are getting paid to recommend them.
And what remains is a question advertising spent all that time trying to make us forget:
ARE YOU TELLING ME BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT?
OR BECAUSE I’M LISTENING?
