October in Miami is funny because absolutely nothing changes.

It’s still hot.

The palm trees remain aggressively alive. Nobody is drinking anything warm unless it’s an espresso martini someone forgot about.

And yet, somehow, the city becomes Halloween.

You notice it slowly.

Someone puts fake cobwebs over a perfectly healthy monstera.

The party flyers get harder to read.

Every DJ suddenly has a photo where they’re staring directly into a flash.

Then one weekend you go out and there are three vampires smoking outside the club.

Okay. We’re here.

Miami is particularly good at Halloween because this city already understands the importance of becoming someone else for the evening.

We love an outfit. We love an entrance.

We love telling everyone we’re “not really going out tonight” and then appearing somewhere at 1:17 a.m. looking completely different from the person who said that.

Halloween simply makes the behavior official

And obviously, everyone approaches it differently.

There are people who have been planning their costume since August.

There are people who will spend $400 recreating an extremely specific celebrity photo from 2003.

There are men who will put on sunglasses and tell you they’re a vampire.

We need to start holding the line somewhere.

October also does something to nightlife here.

Everything gets slightly darker and significantly more dramatic.

The techno gets harder.

The lighting gets redder.

Every warehouse develops a fog machine.

A party you’ve attended twelve times suddenly has “ritual” in the description.

Nobody knows what the ritual is.

You bought a ticket anyway.

And then there are the costumes.

Miami Halloween costumes exist somewhere between fashion, pornography and an inside joke.

The best ones require you to stare for about four seconds before going, Ohhhhh.

The worst ones require the person wearing them to explain.

If you have to pull up the reference photo, we’ve already lost valuable time.

But I respect the commitment.

That’s probably the best part of Halloween here. Everyone commits.

Not necessarily to being scary. God, no.

To the bit.

For one month, the person who normally takes forty minutes deciding what to wear suddenly

has prosthetics. Someone’s boyfriend has agreed to bleach his eyebrows. Your friend who

“doesn’t dress up” is standing in your bathroom wearing fake blood and asking if you have black

eyeliner.

And somehow, nobody feels overdressed.

Because Miami has always had a very generous relationship with too much.

Too much skin. Too much bass. Too much perfume. Too much effort for somewhere everyone

claimed was casual.

October just gives us plausible deniability.

It’s not extra.

It’s Halloween.

Which is probably why spooky season here works despite having none of the actual ingredients

of spooky season.

No cold weather. No dead trees. No charming little foggy mornings.

Just humidity, strobe lights, angel wings, fake blood and someone you vaguely know dressed as

a reference you pretend to understand.

Honestly?

Close enough.
