Some friendships don’t end.

Nobody does anything terrible.

Nobody sends the paragraph.

Nobody gets blocked.

There isn’t even a last conversation you can point to.

You just slowly stop knowing each other.

Which is strange when there was once a time you knew everything.

NOTHING EVEN HAPPENED.

That’s the annoying part.

It would almost be easier if there were a villain.

Instead, life just kept happening.

Someone moved.

Someone fell in love.

Jobs changed.

New friends appeared.

The group chat got quieter.

We need to get dinner soon became something said every six months.

Until eventually, you realize you don’t actually know what’s happening in each

other’s lives anymore.

Not the Instagram version.

The real version.

Who they call when something goes wrong.

What they’re worried about.

What they can’t stop talking about lately.

At some point, someone you once knew instinctively became someone you need

updates on.

BUT YOU STILL KNOW TOO MUCH.

You know the old bedroom.

The terrible ex.

The family drama.

The phase everyone agreed never to speak about again.

You know stories the people in their life now have probably never heard.

You remember what they wanted before they became whoever they are now.

It creates a very specific kind of relationship:

Strangers with lore.

Someone can become almost completely unfamiliar while you still know exactly

why a certain song would make them cry.

That has to be one of friendship’s weirdest little tricks.

THERE’S NO WORD FOR WHAT YOU ARE NOW.

Romantic relationships get endings.

We broke up.

Everyone understands.

There’s an ex.

There’s a before and after.

Friendship is messier.

Ex-best friend sounds like there was a war.

Former friend sounds vaguely hostile.

Old friend sounds like you fought together in 1943.

So most people just keep saying:

“My friend.”

Even when they haven’t spoken in a year.

Maybe because nothing else quite describes someone who isn’t really in your life

anymore but doesn’t feel completely outside of it either.

SOMETIMES PEOPLE JUST OUTGROW THE SAME ROOM.

Not every friendship is supposed to survive every version of two people.

And that doesn’t make it fake.

Maybe the friendship was exactly right for that moment.

You were 19 and had nowhere else to be.

You worked the same terrible job.

You lived three doors apart.

You went through something together.

You needed each other.

Then life got bigger.

Sometimes people grow apart without either person growing wrong.

There’s nothing to forgive.

Nothing dramatic to explain.

Just two lives that stopped overlapping enough to stay familiar.

AND THE LOVE DOESN’T ALWAYS LEAVE WITH IT.

That might be the strangest part.

You can know almost nothing about someone’s current life and still want it to be

good.

You hope the job worked out.

You hope whoever they love is good to them.

You hope their family is okay.

You hope they’re happy.

And if you ran into each other tomorrow, maybe ten minutes in it would feel like no

time had passed.

Or maybe it wouldn’t.

Both are allowed.

Not every person we love stays close enough to witness every version of us.

Some people only know one.

But they knew that version really fucking well.

Maybe that’s why it’s possible to love someone,

and not really know them anymore.
